How It Works

How It Works

Get started in three simple steps

01

Create or Join a Group

Set up a new savings group with your own rules, or join an existing one via invite link or code. Define contribution amounts, frequency, and payout order.

  • Set a group name, contribution amount (e.g. TSh 20,000), and cycle frequency.
  • Choose a payout order: sequential, random ballot, or custom priority.
  • Invite members via a shareable link or QR code.
  • Set penalties for late contributions if your group prefers.
02

Contribute on Schedule

Make your contributions via mobile money on the agreed schedule. Track your payments and see the group's progress in real time.

  • Open the app on contribution day and tap 'Pay Now'.
  • Select your mobile money provider (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money).
  • The app records your payment and notifies the group instantly.
  • Late reminders are sent automatically — no admin needed.
03

Receive Your Payout

When your turn arrives, the accumulated funds are automatically sent to your mobile money account. No manual transfers needed.

  • When your position in the rotation arrives, the accumulated pool is disbursed.
  • Funds are sent directly to your registered mobile money account.
  • The full transaction is logged and visible to all group members.
  • The cycle continues automatically for the next member in line.

Frequently asked questions

What if a member misses a contribution?

The app logs the missed payment. Groups can configure a grace period and/or automatic late fees. The admin is notified and can reach members via the in-app group chat.

Can I be in multiple groups at once?

Yes. There is no limit on how many groups you can join. Each group has its own dashboard, contribution schedule, and payout cycle.

How are payouts sent?

Payouts are disbursed via mobile money — the same providers you use for contributions. Funds typically arrive in your wallet within minutes.

What currencies are supported?

Currently Tanzanian Shillings (TSh). Support for Kenyan Shillings (KES) and Rwandan Francs (RWF) is on the roadmap.

Is there a minimum group size?

Groups require at least 2 members to start. A typical tontine works well with 5–20 members, though Vikoba supports up to 50.
